Universal plant suitable for home gardens as well as park settings. The fruit is perfect as raw food and useful in preparation of preserves. Dogwood berries have health promoting properties.

WHAT IT LOOKS LIKE: Leaves ovate, 7.5-12.5 cm long, pointed, green with pronounced veining, turning brown-red in autumn. Flowers are small, yellow, clustered in bulbous inflorescences, melliferous; appear in March, before the leaves develop. Edible, tasty, sweet and sour, aromatic and healthy fruit, bottle-shaped, dark red, of an average weight 6.5-7.5 g, don’t fall to the ground. Dark red flesh, relatively small stone. The average yield of a dozen year old shrub is 40-45 kg. Fruit ripen in August. Plants yield more fruit when at least two cultivars grow side by side.

HOW IT GROWS: A tall shrub with a spreading or upright habit. Reaches 2-2.5 m in height, grows slowly.

WHERE TO PLANT: Dogwood grows well and yields fruit in both sunny and semi-shaded locations. It prefers fertile, well-drained, neutral or acidic soils. Tolerates drought. Frost hardy cultivar (zone 5-8).

HOW TO PLANT AND GROW: Before planting, immerse the potted plant in a water-filled container for 10-30 min. Place the plant in a 60 x 60 x 60 cm pit, with a 10-cm layer of well-rotten manure at the bottom. Fill the pit with fertile compost soil.  Flatten the ground around the base of the plant and cover with bark mulch. Place the plant in the ground at the same depth as it was in the pot. Fertilize from April and water according to the needs during vegetation season. Regular pruning is not necessary. After a few years, when the plant thickens considerably, a thinning may be required.  Excessive pruning reduces the yield.
