A new, Polish cultivar raised by Szczepan Marczyński, with beautiful, large, violet-blue flowers with frilly sepals’ edges.
WHAT IT LOOKS LIKE: Flowers v. large, 24-28 cm in diameter. They consist of 6-8 sepals, violet-blue with a slightly lighter stripe appearing along the middle as they fade. The sepals’ edges are wavy and frilly, and they have a creamy-white stripe underneath. Sepals lanceolate, overlapping, slightly twisting mid-length. Stamens consist of purple-brown anthers set on white-creamy filaments. The main bloom occurs between May and July and some flowers appear also in September-October. Leaves are light green, matte with slightly wavy edges.
HOW IT GROWS: Climber; climbs with leaf petioles. Moderately strong-growing, reaches 1.60-1.80 m height.
WHERE TO PLANT: Best suited for sunny locations. Thrives in fertile, permeable soil but will grow in most moderate soils if fertilized. The soil pH should be neutral to slightly acidic. Hardy (zone 4-9).
HOW TO PLANT AND GROW: Place the plant in a pit (60 x 60 x 60 cm) with fertile soil and a 10 cm draining layer at the bottom, 5-10 cm deeper than it grew in the container (planting tutorial). It only requires light pruning. At the turn of February and March, it is enough to remove the dead shoots, and prune the live ones: in the first year at 30 cm from the ground, above the strong buds, in the second year - 70 cm, and in the following years at the height of 150 cm (pruning tutorial). In mid-April it should be supplemented with a slow-release fertilizer (e.g. Osmocote 5˗6M). Water during the season.
HOW TO APPLY: Suitable for growing by free-standing supports or those placed by walls, as well as for planting in containers on terraces and balconies.
