A new, Polish cultivar raised by Szczepan Marczyński, with large, beautiful, dark red, velvety flowers and compact habit.
WHAT IT LOOKS LIKE: Flowers 12-16 cm in diameter, consist of 6-8 sepals, dark red, velvety, becoming pink as the bloom lasts, elliptic; underneath the sepals are red with a white-green stripe. Stamens consist of burgundy anthers on yellow-green filaments. The main bloom occurs in May-June and some flowers appear also in July-August. Dark green leaves, matte, single or trifoliate, up to 10 cm.
HOW IT GROWS: Climber; climbs with leaf petioles. Compact habit, reaches 1-1.5 m height.
WHERE TO PLANT: Best suited for sunny locations. Thrives in fertile, permeable soil but will grow in most moderate soils if fertilized. The soil pH should be neutral to slightly acidic. Hardy (zone 4-9).
HOW TO PLANT AND GROW: Place the plant in a pit (60 x 60 x 60 cm) with fertile soil and a 10 cm draining layer at the bottom, 5-10 cm deeper than it grew in the container (planting tutorial). It only requires light pruning. At the turn of February and March, it is enough to remove the dead shoots, and prune the live ones: in the first year at 30 cm from the ground, above the strong buds, in the second year - 70 cm, and in the following years at the height of 100-120 cm (pruning tutorial). In mid-April it should be supplemented with a slow-release fertilizer (e.g. Osmocote 5˗6M). Water during the season.
HOW TO APPLY: Suitable for growing by free-standing supports or those placed by the walls, as well as for planting in containers on terraces and balconies.
